HOW I GOT MY AGENT

I am represented by Sophie Lambert at C&W Agency in London (UK). I have a manuscript on submission (2022) and am working on its follow up.

My journey to representation took 6 years. In 2015, I attended the Festival of Writing at the University of York (UK). I entered two competitions and made both shortlists. I won the prestigious Friday Night Live award on the opening night, which got the attention of four literary agents. Previous winners, like 2014’s Joanna Cannon, are now top selling authors, so this win was a huge personal boost in terms of credibility and confidence.

A day later, I won the Perfect Pitch award, judged by literary agents Jo Unwin and Sam Copeland. It was announced at the Saturday night Gala Dinner, and I read out my pitch to about 450 writers, agents, editors and publishing professionals, securing another three interested literary agents. Of all the agents who gave me their cards, only one really engaged with me afterwards.  Jo Unwin of JULA literary agency read two drafts of my opening chapters and introduced me to Robert Dinsdale, who worked with me as a developmental editor in 2016/17.

When my MS was ready to submit to agents in 2021, Jo Unwin’s pipeline was full with her existing authors. Rob very kindly introduced me to a short list of agents, include Sophie Lambert.  I pitched Sophie. She requested my full manuscript first, then a Zoom meeting... and before that Zoom was over, I had joined Sophie's list.

And that’s how I got my agent :)
