Every year the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards a handful of superb eateries around the globe. The list is dominated by the biggies – Europe, North America and Australia – but every year I just about burst with pride to see restaurants located in my home city – Africa’s gourmet capital – Cape Town, make it onto this prestigious list.
But neither the World’s 50 Best nor its off-shoot the Academy’s Global List are my definitive guides to good eating in Africa. That honour belongs to good old Trip Advisor, where you’ll find cumulative ratings given by real people after eating real meals. Drawn from these illustrious sources and my own adventures, here are my Top 3 Restaurants in Cape Town.
1. The Test Kitchen, Cape Town
Chef Luke Dale-Roberts is currently ranked 28th on the 50 Best list. His restaurant is a focused, industrial space in Cape Town’s uber groovy Woodstock. Trip Advisor travellers said: “Art on a plate and tasted divine” and “adventurous without being over the top” and 92% recommend it. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
2. The Greenhouse, Constantia
This is one of my personal favourite favourites and currently listed on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy’s ‘Global Selection’. Chef Peter Templehoff delivers interesting, delicious South African cuisine in the elegant world of the The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel. Trip Advisor travellers describe it as “a once in a lifetime experience – a delicious work of art.” and 92% recommend it. Email:email@example.com
3. Terroir, Stellenbosch
Chef Michael Broughton’s Terroir is also currently listed on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy’s ‘Global Selection’. Classic French cooking using the best seasonal produce, the menu celebrates ‘terroir-driven food’. Trip Advisor travellers said, “Words cannot describe the food experience we had. Perfect in every respect!” and 81% recommend it. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
